President Donald Trump’s commercial affairs division, a unit that advises the president on the commercial affairs of foreign companies, is being reviewed, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The commercial affairs office, which is headed by former Vice President Mike Pence, had been under Trump’s watch until Trump fired the chief executive of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the person said.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the review is still under way.
It’s unclear whether the office would be replaced.
A White House official said Pence would continue as commercial affairs director.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In his first year as president, Trump has directed his commerce secretary to review the office’s functions and the bureau’s role in commercial affairs, and is seeking guidance from the commerce department on how to best protect the interests of U.s. companies, the Wall Street Review reported last week.
Commerce Department officials are expected to submit a report to Trump within 30 days that details the bureau, which was created in 2017 to protect U.a.s businesses.
A person familiar said that report is expected to focus on the bureau and whether to overhaul it, but did not provide details.
A White House spokesman said Pence will continue as chief executive, and that the president wants the bureau to focus more on promoting U. s trade and economic policies.
A spokesman for the chamber said the president is “very disappointed” that the bureau has been “misused.”
