TORONTO — Toronto Maple Leaf general manager Brian Burke announced Tuesday the club has waived forward Connor McDavid.
McDavid will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the Ontario Hockey League.
Burke said the 24-year-old McDavid is a restricted free agent who has scored 22 goals in 73 games with Toronto.
Burkie also said the Maple Leafs will waive goaltender Niklas Backstrom to clear salary cap space.
Burk also said forward Tyler Bozak, defenseman Nikita Soshnikov and defenseman Alexei Emelin are all eligible to return to the Maple Leaf lineup.
